Can Bob Dylan sing?

Would Bob Dylan do well in American Idol?
First of all let me tell my readers that I like Bob Dylan. I am not a serious fan of his but there are some songs which he has produced and sung which I feel are timeless. An example is "Blowing in the Wind" which was voted into the top 500 songs of all time by the "Rolling Stone" magazine. I like that song simply because I like it.. I don't care how popular or unpopular it is.
Recently I went to a Bob Dylan concert and I was a bit disturbed by the experience because I was listening to Bob Dylan live... but it did not sound like Bob Dylan at all. At the end of Bob's appearance I spoke to a Dylan fan who had been to previous concerts and he told me that it was even worse several years ago. If Bob Dylan does not want to sing in a melodious fashion in his concerts, then why are his fans so faithful to him? I did not understand why so many fans were getting excited by Bob's performance. Yes! People were jumping up and down and some of them screaming. I am wondering if Bob would get the same kind of attention if he were to compete in American Idol?
Maybe the "American Idol" question is a ridiculous one because when I listen to some of Bob's songs they seem to be incredibly deep. I can't see anything deep in American Idol and my guess is that Bob and his fans would probably feel the same. The next video is one of my favorite Bob Dylan songs.
I think that "Slow Train Coming" might be meaningful to some people who don't want to live in a "la-la land" but instead face the inevitable.

Bob Dylan Continually Re-Inventing Himself
A Bob Dylan fan told me that Bob Dylan does not like to perform in every concert in exactly the same way because he is an artist. We all know that artists who paint pictures probably don't want to paint the same thing over and over again. I can understand this view but what I cannot understand is why an artist would want to sing for his fans without even trying to be a little bit melodious?
OK- I am going to stop picking on Bob Dylan and talk about this in general because I suspect that some artists are under far too much pressure to produce something new, rather than just doing what they are good at. I want to use the Eagles as an example. I like the Eagles but I don't like some of their concert renditions of their popular songs. I feel that they have become "too artistic" and they lose power in doing so. I miss the way that they used to be. When I think of the Eagles I think about "Life in the Fast Lane" - I like the way they sung it on this album because it moves me more than their recent stuff.
I wonder if anyone else feels the same way?
I have judged Bob Dylan and the Eagles on this Hub and it is probably not fair if I don't give them a chance to judge me too. I am not a singer at all but I left the last video for Bob and the Eagles to listen to in case they want to complain about my voice- LOL!

As an ageing Dylan fan I love his gravelly voice. I know he cannot traditionally sing well though
I have always loved Bob Dylan, the poet/song writer. But I have long, long said that Joan Baez could take a Bob Dylan song and ROCK IT! Bob is a wonderful musician and he can sing some. He can't sing his songs like others can. But- he's a star poet. Nice write!
Can Bob Dylan sing? I guess so, in bis own inimitable way. Same with Neil Young. A sort of idiosyncratic style that they can carry off where others would flounder.
Nice Hub, nice singing too whosibid
Cheers
Bob Dylan cannot sing. That is all thee is to it. He never could. He has written some outstanding and fantastic songs--I grew up in the Folk Music Era--but he never could really sing. I was watching a PBS special on Folk Legends recently and it had an old clip from a Greenwich Village Coffee House with Dylan singing Blowin' In the Wind. He had a makeshift backup chorus, which included Joan Baez, who can sing. Anyway, it was the best Dylan performance I ever heard--still couldn't sing, but it was an appropriate presentation for the time.

Thanks for another great article WHOISBID (A.K.A. The Reggae Man)
As an artist myself (o.k. perhaps not quite the same caliber of Dylan & The Eagles) I know it can be really difficult to keep the fluidity of inspiration going all the time...Some artists actually believe that everything has "already been created" so if this is true what do we/artists create? It's not an easy path in life...It is in the lulls and the lows, in the moments of insecurity (and a little feeling of worthlessness) that genius may follow...Dylan & The Eagles needed the space for hits & blunders- it is all part of the journey- I believe. I'm not an avid Eagles fan of their recent stuff, but on my iPod Hotel California comes under the genre Classic Rock!
